GCACW Tactics: Battlefield Basics

Grand Assault Example

The third day of the battle, the Confederates attempt to break the Union center. Longstreet makes an assault with Pickett's division against Hancock's position on Cemetery Ridge which is supported by the Union artillery reserve. The assault roll succeeds with a 5. Lee then attempts a grand assault and rolls a 3. Units from two hexes can join in the attack; Heth (Lee's hex) and Pender (Longstreet's hex) join in the grand assault. The die roll modifiers are: +0[ratio(39:22)] -3[artillery(12-23)] +1[tac(4-3)] +1[assault] = -1 attack. The dice are even and the result is a -1 5D/1F as the Rebels are repulsed.
