GCACW Tactics: Battlefield Basics

Hasty Attack Example

Heth's division (17 MV) starts the day in Cashtown (one hex west of Lutheran Church in the NW corner of the picture). AP Hill activates Heth (movement roll of 4+2 = 6 MP). Heth moves adjacent to Buford (Gamble; 3 MV), spending 5 MP. The Union player declines a cavalry retreat and Confederate player declares a hasty attack with Heth's last movement point. The attack modifiers are: +4[ratio(17:3)] +0[artillery(5-1)] +1[tac(3-2)] -1[hasty] = +4 attack. Buford hangs tough with a favorable die roll for a +1 D/1D result. Heth ends the activation disorganized, F4.

A risky move by the Union pays off. A cavalry retreat would have prevented Heth from continuing (with a 3 MV cavalry brigade, the minimum MP loss is 1 MP). The Union had a 58% chance of tying or beating the Confederate roll and forcing Heth to take on a few more fatigue levels by inflicting an "f", "F" or "D" result.
