GCACW Tactics: Battlefield Basics

Normal Attack Example

Hill and Pender (14 MV) begin the activation in Little's Store at F1. Hill activates Pender (movement dr = 6+2 = 8 MP). Pender moves into Heth's hex, adjacent to Reynolds (Wadsworth, Gamble; 10 MV), spending 4 MP. The Union player orders Gamble to cavalry retreat. Gamble rolls a two which subtracts one movement point from Pender's movement allowance. Gamble is already disorganized and at fatigue level 4, so other than retreating back four to six hexes (out of the picture), there is no further effect on Gamble. The Confederate player announces a normal attack, spending two of Pender's three remaining movement points. The attack modifiers are: +0[ratio(14:8)] +0[artillery(4-1)] +1[tac(4-3)] +0[normal]= +1 attack. The dice favor the Confederates for a +3 1Dr/1Fa result, pushing the Yankees back from Seminary Ridge. Pender advances and ends the activation organized, F4.

The Union player uses a cavalry retreat to prevent Pender from making a prepared attack (which would have required four movement points). There was no benefit to have Gamble stay for the combat anyway because the combat ratio would have been 1:1 (14:10). The Confederate player also makes a risky +1 attack that could have potentially disorganized a strong division.
