GCACW Tactics: Battlefield Basics

Prepared Attack Example

Ewell's corps starts the activation a few hexes north of Gettysburg (see the "normal attack" example for their starting positions) with both divisions at F1. Ewell activates both units for movement (dr=6+2 = 8 MP). Rodes moves into the position shown above and Ewell leads Early (11 MV) to be adjacent to Howard's hex (2 divisions, 11 MV). Early declares a prepared attack. The die roll modifiers are: +0[ratio(11:11)] -2[artillery(2-2)] +1[tac(4-3)] +1[prepared] +3[flank] -1[creek] = +2 attack. The result is a +3 1Dr/1Fa and Early advances into Howard's hex.

The Confederate player could have transferred Ewell to Rodes and made the same attack at +3 (a prepared attack with no creek modifier). Alternatively, Early could have attacked before Rodes moved and then allowed Rodes to move adjacent to Gettysburg (assuming Howard was pushed back.).
